Most people have a place — a specific room, a particular chair, a time of day in a familiar space — where they feel most like themselves. It is almost never the most impressive place they have been. Impressive rooms produce a different feeling entirely: a kind of heightened awareness that is not the same as ease.
The room where you feel most at ease is usually the one that makes fewest demands. It is familiar without being boring. It has light you like. It smells, vaguely, of something you cannot name but associate with being comfortable.
Ease is not comfort. It is the feeling of being correctly located.
This is the LIMEN premise: that a person can identify what makes a room feel like theirs, and that one of the components of that feeling is atmospheric — and specifically olfactory. The quiz we built is an attempt to make this identification easier. What places do you think about? What time of day feels most natural to you? What materials do you gravitate toward?
The answers lead to a fragrance. But what they are really pointing toward is a version of the room you already feel at home in — made a little more deliberate, a little more yours.
